MODEL PENDIDIKAN : CHRIST-CENTERED EDUCATION (PENDIDIKAN YANG BERPUSAT PADA KRISTUS) Bagian 4

C.Siapa Pendidik itu?

Michael S. Lawson dalam “Biblical Foundations for A Philosophy of Teaching” mengatakan “bahwa mandat utama dari pendidikan Kristen yang diberikan oleh Kristus adalah lebih daripada sekedar menyampaikan informasi. Berdasarkan Matius 28:19-20, seorang guru Kristen harus mendidik para murid. Seorang guru Kristen harus bergumul dengan tugasnya sampai para murid menjadi seorang murid dari Yesus Kristus sendiri.”
Sedangkan James R. Slaughter dalam “The Teacher as Discipler” mengatakan,

“God calls all Christians to make disciple, and Christian teachers are no exeption. Indeed they have a unique opportunity to mold the development of their students regardless of the discipline they teach. The teacher disciples his student by acting as their shepherd (the ministry of consecration), as their friend (the ministry of affection), as their model (the ministry of demonstration), as their servant (the ministry of ministration) dan as their unifier to thruth (the ministry of integration).”

Jadi apa hakekat seorang Pendidik/teacher itu? Seorang Pendidik adalah seorang Guru yang memuridkan atau menjadikan seseorang murid Kristus. Lawson mengklasifikasikan dua golongan makna dari arti teacher ini. Golongan pertama meliputi: expert, authority, professional, genius, intellectual, master, specialist, briliant.

Dan golongan kedua adalah: guide, coach, facilitator, model, encourager, motivator, stimulator, dan mentor. Menurutnya, golongan kata yang kedua ini mengandung makna yang lebih relevan bagi murid yang diajar. Karena kata-kata ini lebih mendarat, lebih dapat diterima oleh para murid.

Selanjutnya Wilbert J. McKeachie memberikan enam peranan dari seorang teacher yaitu :
1. Expert/neophyte. As an expert, the teacher is to transmit information-the concepts and perspectives of the field or subject-while recognizing areas of inadequate expertise.

2. Formal authority/subject. As a formal authority, the teacher is to set goals and procedures for reaching goals and as a subject be open to students’ suggestions where appropriate.

3. Socializing/socialized agent. As a socializing agent, the teacher is to clarify goals and options beyond the class or course and to prepare students for these. As a socialized agent, the teacher is to be open to the suggestions and influence of students and others within and beyond the teaching settings.

4. Facilitators. As a facilitator the teacher is to promote creativity and growth in students’ own terms and to help them overcome obstacles to learning. The teacher is to be sensitive to his or her own creativity and growth.

5. Ego ideal in process. As an ego ideal, the teacher is to convey the excitement and value of educational inquiry in given areas and recognize areas where ideals and practice are lacking.

6. Person. As a person, the teacher is to convey the full range of human needs and skills relevant to and sustained by one’s educating activity, to be validated as a human being, and to validate the students to persons.

Sedangkan Herman Harrell Horne dalam karya klasiknya Jesus the Master Teacher, menguraikan beberapa kualifikasi yang esensial dari seorang teacher:

1. A vision that encompases the world
2. Knowledge of the heart of man
3. Mastering of the subject taught
4. Aptness is teaching
5. A life that embodies the teaching

Dengan melihat konsepsi-konsepsi di atas tentang kualifikasi, dan pemahaman tentang “who is the teacher?” maka dalam kaitan dengan Christ-Centered Education ini, saya melihat bahwa seorang Pendidik adalah seorang Guru yang mengarahkan, melatih, mendidik seorang murid melalui keberadaannya sebagai seorang “sparing parter” seorang “mentor” yang bisa menjadi sahabat, namun tetap tidak kehilangan esensinya sebagai Pendidik yaitu menjadikan seorang menjadi murid Kristus yang sejati.

Melalui segala kemampuan kognitif, skills maupun pemahamannya yang koheren, seorang Pendidik mampu mentransfer semua “materi-materi pengajaran Kristus” ke dalam diri muridnya yang disertai dengan kemampuannya untuk mewujudnyatakan semua “konsepsinya” itu ke dalam tindakan nyata yang bisa dilihat dan dirasakan manfaatnya oleh murid-muridnya. Jadi seorang Guru adalah sebagai “manifestasi nyata” dari keberadaan Kristus sebagai Sang Guru Sejati. Seorang Guru Kristen adalah sebagai representatif dari Kristus sendiri.
